Biogeochemical transformations of dissolved organic matter at the sediment-water interface: results from in situ incubations within benthic chambers ArchiMer
Accornero, A; Picon, P; De Bovee, F.
Biogeochemical transformations of dissolved organic matter at the sediment-water interface were investigated by the use of benthic chambers in the western Gulf of Lions. The experimental approach used for this study consisted of in situ incubations of radiolabeled glutamic acid ((14)C-Glu), followed by a sequential extraction allowing the quantification of the radioactivity associated to different chemical fractions, representative of different biogeochemical processes. This technique was devised to simulate the fate of simple dissolved compounds resulting from the degradation of particulate organic matter near the seafloor. In our experiment the substrate underwent both biotic (mineralization, bacterial incorporation) and abiotic (geopolymerization)...

Intercalibration of benthic flux chambers II. Hydrodynamic characterization and flux comparisons of 14 different designs ArchiMer
Tengberg, Anders; Hall, P; Andersson, U; Linden, B; Styrenius, O; Boland, G; De Bovee, F; Carlsson, B; Ceradini, S; Devol, A; Duineveld, G; Friemann, J; Glud, R; Khripounoff, Alexis; Leather, J; Linke, P; Lund Hansen, L; Rowe, G; Santschi, P; De Wilde, P; Witte, U.
We have compared 14 different sediment incubation chambers, most of them were used on bottom landers. Measurements of mixing time, pressure gradients at the bottom and Diffusive Boundary Layer thickness (DBL) were used to describe the hydrodynamic properties of the chambers and sediment-water solute fluxes of silicate (34 replicates) and oxygen (23 replicates) during three subsequently repeated incubation experiments on a homogenized, macrofauna-free sediment. The silicate fluxes ranged from 0.24 to 1.01 mmol m(-2) day(-1) and the oxygen fluxes from 9.3 to 22.6 mmol m(-2) day(-1). There was no statistically significant correlation between measured fluxes and the chamber design or between measured fluxes and hydrodynamic settings suggesting that type of...

Les sites méditerranéens. Ecologie pélagique et benthique. Rapport concernant les campagnes Ecolion 1 & 2 ArchiMer
Arzul, G; Panouse, M; Romana, A; Fiala, M; Razouls, S; De Bovee, F; Labat, J.p..
As part of its nuclear program, E.D.F. put the C.N.E.X.O. in charge of the ecological study of a list of sites that had been considered for the implantation of nuclear power plants on the Mediterranean coast: PORT-la-N0UVELLE South, PORT-la-NOUVELLE North and FLEURY-sur-AUDE. The aim of this study is to compare, from an ecological point of view, the different sites during critical periods of the annual cycle: summer and spring. This report summarises the results of the two campaigns (ECOLION l and II) conducted on the area located between the Cap d'Agde and the Cap Leucate, and including the three studied sites. The study analysed the physicochemical parameters and the primary and secondary pelagic productions, and includes a qualitative and quantitative...

The effects of a strong winter storm on physical and biological variables at a shelf site in the Mediterranean ArchiMer
Gremare, A; Amouroux, Jm; Cauwet, G; Charles, F; Courties, C; De Bovee, F; Dinet, A; Devenon, Jean-luc; Durrieu De Madron, X; Ferre, B; Fraunie, P; Joux, F; Lantoine, F; Lebaron, P; Naudin, Jj; Palanques, A; Pujo-pay, M; Zudaire, L.
A survey involving both permanent mooring and high frequency sampling was carried in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer during the fall of 1999 to assess the effect of strong and unpredictable meteorological events on the functioning of a coastal Mediterranean ecosystem. A severe winter storm took place on 12 November, which generated waves with a significant height of 7 m and a sea surface rise of about 0.5 m. The near-bottom current speed at 24 m reached 30 cm s(-1). This storm induced a significant increase in total suspended matter through resuspension and then a subsequent increase in gross sedimentation rates. It also resulted in an increase of the proportion of refractory particulate organic matter in the water column. It also tended to increase nutrient...
